Longtime friends and business partners, David Eber and Wayne Malen, founded Samtosa Clothing in 2009. David and Wayne created this chic and comfortable yoga clothing line to reflect their promise to respect the earth and promote a responsible society. Their vision is brought to life through the production of eco-conscious clothing made in the USA and by making donations to the International Organization for Adolescents (www.iofa.org), which supports some of the world’s most vulnerable youth. Samtosa Clothing is the second incarnation of David and Wayne’s collective vision. In 1989, the two started their first company manufacturing women’s clothing. In 2003, David was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and discovered his passion for yoga, which he shared with Wayne. After years of friendship and success, the two decided to sell their business in 2006. In 2008, David became a certified Jivamukti yoga teacher. The next year, David and Wayne combined their love of practicing yoga and making beautiful clothing to create Samtosa Clothing. In Sanskrit ‘samtosa’ (pronounced sam-toe-sha) means ‘contentment’. This is the promise that is offered to the yoga practitioner - one workout at a time - while looking good on the outside and feeling great on the inside. Samtosa Clothing was created with the intention of giving back and doing business responsibly. The company emphasizes the three pillars of sustainability: the environmental; the social; and the economic.
Environmental pillar: Samtosa Clothing is fabricated with bamboo and organic cotton. Bamboo grows naturally, without the aid of pesticide, herbicide, or irrigation. All of Samtosa Clothing is knit, cut and sewn, and warehoused in the United States, requiring far less energy to reach domestic customers.
Social pillar: Samtosa Clothing pledges to donate a portion of its profits each year to the International Organization for Adolescents (IOFA), a non-profit organization working in the United States and around the world to combat child exploitation, especially child trafficking and slavery.
Economic pillar: Samtosa Clothing’s manufacturing plants are based in Los Angeles, the warehouses are located in San Francisco and the sales team is a network of representatives globally. Samtosa Clothing is committed to bringing jobs to the United States, and bringing sweatshop-free, quality clothing to yogis worldwide.
